Here is a good way to end the year. Sometimes groomers just want to have fun. This is my Bichon, Ms. Diva in her pink color. We did this for the big bichon bash at Symphony Hill in Tennesse in October. I wanted her to "stand out". She did! It also was great for Breast Cancer Awareness month of October (not to mention Halloween!)
She was quite happy with her pink color. So was I. The coloring was accomplished quite simply by using 10-12 drops of McCormick Neon Pink food coloring through the Bathing Beauty recirculating bathing system. I bathed her first, using a clarifying shampoo to remove all product residue. Then I drew another bath and added the drops of food coloring to the water. I rinsed for about 5 minutes and then added a dash of ShowSeason Results Rinse to the solution to "set" the color, and rinsed it through the coat for a few minutes more. White Vinegar would achieve the same result, but the Results Rinse contains a little silicone detangler to substitute for conditioner and leaves the hair quite combable.
This picture is of her second treatment, 7-10 days after the first. I wanted that HOT pink look. The first time I did not use quite enough of the coloring agent. This was such a quick and simple way to color, without the waiting for the color to process. I did use "dedicated" towels that have become her color towels, and I wore latex gloves for the coloring and drying phase. I dried her with a Laube Magnum Force dryer at medium force so as to not blow off colored water.
Here she is with her latest look:
What a cute little girl she is, and this topknot effect makes her look so "girlie". We love it, and so do my customers. I've worked so hard at achieving the proper Bichon head, but sometimes it feels good to just let go and have fun with my dog! What do you think?
PS. 1/18/08 Here she is with BOTH the pink and the new hair "style". Look close and you will see the "bling bling" in the topknot.
This was Diva's look for yesterday, when she went to a middle school for a show-and-tell about grooming. She had dozens and dozens of kids squealing and begging to feel her soft, pink, hair. And she took it all in like the little princess she is. She was a rock star and I was her entourage.
I love the topknot. It might be something to try on my girl, as her hair is so fine and floppy. Here she is in her modified trim:

Adorable, and a perfect candidate for a topknot. Why not? It was the floppy head that got me to pull Diva's up in a topknot. We haven't scissored her head for awhile, as my apprentice is working up the courage to do her head. Meanwhile, she needed a good conditioning treatment, and that made it even more soft and floppy. So I pulled it up and stuck a soft band around it and, voila! our new look.
ReplyDeleteI was also inspired by the Japanese grooms I saw posted on the Groomers BBS. My impression of Japanese grooming is that they put topknots on EVERYTHING! Why not topknot, I say. We get so stuck in our "proper breed trim" box. I could have titled this, "Grooming Outside of the Box." LOL!
Hi, Ms. BBird! My mom is a member of the BFL and loves keeping up with your blog. She loves the picture of Ms. Diva all decked out in pink. Since I am a Louisiana Bichon and we have a dog Mardi Gras krewe here in Baton Rouge, my mom thinks she's going to dye my tail purple, green, and gold, using Kool-Aid in shampoo this year. She really wants to do my "fro" in those colors but my dad says NO WAY! I'll make sure she send you a picture when my tail is done.

I just love the topknot on Diva. I was at the NE Bash and saw her pink look. In the photo above she seems much pinker. I love it too.
ReplyDeleteShe looks sooooo cute anf girlie !!!
ReplyDeleteDiva looks adorable--"pretty in pink!" I would love to have Ringo done like this for a Breast Cancer Awareness Event (if we had an appropriate one, and if he didn't think it were undignified for a boy).
ReplyDeleteI think the topknot is a refreshing change! Cute! After all, we girls like to change our hairstyles every so often. Why not Diva?

Your pup is so precious, looks like a stuffed toy a little girl would snuggle with.
ReplyDeleteDive is soooo cute with the hot pink coat. I'm thinking of getting a bichon and I think I would defiantely give her some color oomph every once in a while. How long does it take for the color to was out?
ReplyDeleteI have to share this with my friends. She's so cute in bright pink. I wonder if my cat would let me do this to him? Somehow I doubt it, he doesn't really like water. I wonder about using a spray with the coloring?
