For years, curious groomers have been asking for information about Les Pooch F&T Degreaser Shampoo. At trade shows or on the phone, company representatives would respond to inquiries about ingredient with: "It is a proprietary blend of natural oils."
Les Pooch founder, Michel Raviol, offered this list of ingredients for the F&T Degreaser shampoo to the Shampoos and the Grooming Industry Facebook group:
Here is my "decoding" of the ingredient list:
Bio-terge 804 - A surfactant blend of Sodium c14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, and Lauramide DEA. The Bio-terge 804 is the supplier name (Stepan Co.) of the ingredient(s).
TritonX-45 - non-ionic surfactant used as an emulsifier. Correct name: Octylphenol Ethoxylate.
Triton GR-5M - anionic surfactant, from Dow Chemical. Emulsifying and dispearsing agent. Not commonly found in cosmetics, many industrial applications. Correct name: sulfosuccinate.
10 Mol Surfactant - Most likely something like Tergitol NP-10 surfactant from Dow Chemical, a nonionic detergent with 10 moles of ethoxylation. Correct Name: nonylphenol ethoxylate.
Orange Valencia Oil - >90% d’linomene. Valencia oranges have more flavor components than other oranges, but not greater cosmetic value.
Isopropyl Alcohol - solvent
Distilled Water - the diluent
Coenzyme Oil - See below
Lemon ZEP** - a hard-surface antibacterial disinfectant and cleaner known to cut through grease. Not used in cosmetics, this is a product, not an ingredient.
Formaldehyde - Really?? Formaldehyde is a highly toxic gas. Most likely they are using a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. The company uses Quaternium-15 in their other products.
FD&C Yellow & Red - for that bright orange color.
*This is the explanation of the ingredient Coenzyme Oil from Michel Raviol: "Coenzyme Oil is a blend of natural vegetable oils we came up with that help moisturize the hair shaft while at the same time the degreasing elements degrease."
**Lemon ZEP Ingredients (from ZEP website: Water (Solvent); C9-11 Alcohols Ethoxylated 4-6EO (Surfactant – Emulsifying Agent); Tetrasodium EDTA (Chelating Agent; Corrosion Inhibitor); Lauramine Oxide (Surfactant – Cleaning Agent); Dipropylene Glycol Propyl Ether (Solvent); Dipropylene Glycol Butyl Ether (Coupling Agent; Solvent); Alkylbenzene Sulfonic Acid (Surfactant - Cleaning Agent); Benzene, C10-16-alkyl derivatives (Surfactant - Anionic); Sulfuric Acid (pH Adjuster); Acid Yellow 34 (Colorant); Calcomine Turquoise GT (Colorant); Fragrance
On the LP webite, F&T is described as [an] "unique blend of 12 natural oils".
"Tackle tough dirt, oil and mats with Pooch Botanique’s F&T Degreaser, Dematter & Deep Cleanser. Nourishing and conditioning, the delicately scented formula also penetrates difficult mats and tangles when poured directly on the troublesome area."
COMMENTARY: There are many reasons to not accept this list as valid. Most significant is the inclusion of Lemon ZEP. I simply cannot believe that this industrial cleaner would be used as an ingredient in a pet shampoo product. I also cannot believe that formaldehyde is an ingredient. If we overlook those two items, the list reveals a powerful combination of cleansing surfactants that look more like a tough surface cleaner than a hair care formula.
